protected shore

Protected shores look very different in comparison to wave-exposed areas. Protected shores have a lot more open space. Algae tends to be lush and there are more mobile organisms foraging for food. The algae tends to form a buffer protecting organisms from physical stresses, providing shade, moisture, and a cooler environment. Mussels and barnacles are limited here due to the abundance of predators, like the dogwhelk.
