Rocky shore or ledge is the second most common intertidal habitat in Maine. There are approximately 36,243 acres of rock ledge on Maine's shores. Thirty five percent of these acres are located on offshore islands. As indicated by the map above, the majority of the rocky shoreline is located in the North Central area of the state, between Penobscot Bay and Machias Bay. Rocky shore provides attachment sites for seaweeds, shelter for marine life, habitat and nursery areas for fish and invertebrates, roosting areas for seabirds, and foraging and haul out areas for seals. |
