surf

Imagine living in an area where you would be subjected to pounding waves every day. Perched on a hard rock with no protection you would need to find food, protect yourself from predators, and breathe both under and out of the water.

The shores of the Gulf of Maine formed during the last Ice Age, about 10,000 to 20,000 years ago. Glaciers removed the sediments along the coast, leaving behind jagged, rock covered shores. Maine's rocky shores are home to a large diversity of plants and animals. The organisms are well adapted to live in this harsh environment. The patterns of zonation and the daily tidal cycles have made rocky shores interesting and relatively accessible habitats to observe and investigate.

Think about this...
How might you survive in this environment as a human. Make a list of what you would need to spend 24hrs in the intertidal. Count how many tidal cycles you'll experience, and the various challenges that are caused by high tide and low tide.
