**Remember
that lichens are two separate organisms, a fungus
and an algae, that live together in symbiosis.
Each organism brings special abilities to the relationship
resulting in these adaptations:
• The
fungus has a relatively thick outer surface which
protects the overall structure of the lichen.
•The
fungus is also very absorbent, storing water for
use at a later time.
• Lots of tiny
filaments anchor the fungus to the rock.
• The algae
photosynthesizes producing food for itself and
the fungus.
• They
derive their water and essential nutrients mainly
from the atmosphere.
