dulse   dumontia
Palmaria palmata, or dulse, is a red seaweed commonly found among the subtidal algae. Purplish red in color, this seaweed has a broad flat blade that is thick and leathery in texture. The occurrence of this species becomes more frequent eastward along the coast. Dulse is harvested commercially and in its sun-dried form can be eaten raw or used as a flavor enhancer in salads, soups, and stirfries.
Dumontia spp. is another red algae commonly found subtidally and in lower tidepools. Appearing in the early spring, it has long hollow blades that are often twisted.
