obtusata egg   embryo

Littorina obtusata undergoes internal fertilization.   Females will lay egg masses containing 50-150 eggs on blades of algae, like the one seen in the image above left.  The embryos undergo direct development and emerging juveniles look like miniature adults. The image above right features a developing smooth periwinkle embryo inside the egg. Click on the image for a larger view and labels.
