regen star

Sea stars have the unique ability to regenerate lost arms. The Northern sea star pictured above lost three of its arms. They could have been lost to predators, or to being caught in crevices or shifting substrate. As long as a portion of the central disc of the sea star remains intact, (this is where the regenerative cells are located), the sea star will be able to regrow fully functional arms.
