One characteristic that sets L. saxatilis apart from the other periwinkles in the rocky intertidal is the way it raises its young. This snail has internal fertilization and keeps the developing baby snails protected inside the shell in a brood pouch, until they are ready to emerge, fully functional and resembling miniature adults.
