digitata

Laminaria digitata is another common kelp along Maine's coast. Commonly known as horsetail kelp, this olive-brown species is designed to withstand high wave energy on exposed shores by dividing its blade into numerous smaller "fingers" or blades. It can have up to 30 of these smaller blades. The stipe of this species is generally shorter and flattens out as it meets the base of the blade. An interesting growth pattern in this species is that its stipe is perennial and its blade is annual. This species can also be found in tide pools.
