Fucus distichus prefers the lowest reaches
of
this zone.This species lacks air bladders and can be identified
by flattened blades and spear-shaped tips. Broad, flat
blades provide flotation when submerged. |

Fucus spiralis can be found in the mid to lower
portions of the mid-intertidal, and most abundant just
below the band of barnacles that defines the mid-intertidal .
This species can withstand long periods of exposure.
It lacks air bladders but has distinctive ridges
on the receptacles as pictured above. You'll also recognize
this species by the blades that curl into spirals. |
