Work at Sea...Continued

Now that we have our water collected from different depths, what do we do with it? We want to know two things:

        1. What small planktonic organisms – that we cannot easily see – are in the water?
        2. What are those small planktonic organisms doing?

Plankton are marine organisms that cannot swim against a current. They are often classified by their size and by where they get their carbon and energy. We use several different techniques to find out what types of plankton are in the water and what they are doing.

The techniques we will use are listed below. Select each of the techniques to learn more about them, or scroll through them all by selecting 'View All Techniques.'

FlowCAM

Chlorophyll Extraction

Staining and Slide Making

FACScan

Radioactive Tracers

DNA Sampling

Virus Filtering

DOC Measuring

Cruise Activity #2: Use the plankton size key and the description of each technique to figure out what type(s) of plankton we are using in each of these methods. A printable table is provided as a PDF file to guide your note-taking. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat or another way to view PDF files, click here to download the free software.
