Bailey Island, Maine
Latitude:043° 43' 34.49"N
Longitude:069° 59' 32.86"W
East-facing continuous rocky shore
exposed to moderate wave action. A coastal trail
begins near the church on Washington St. and ends
near Driftwood Inn on Washington St. The site is
near the "Giant Staircase," a
natural rock formation dropping 200 feet in steps
to the ocean. This site shows classic rocky intertidal
zonation patterns with easy access to the rocky shore
and a series of tide pools from high to low intertidal
positions. |

Lubec, Maine
West Quoddy Head, in Quoddy Head State Park
Latitude: 044° 52' 38.57"N
Longitude:067° 07' 52.75"W
Near the lighthouse. Good classic rocky shore
zonation patterns. East facing shoreline exposed
to moderate to heavy wave action. The best sites
are south of the lighthouse. In fact there is a
set of stairs leading to the shore. There is a
trail extending along the east side of the island
ending near the causeway, connecting the park to
the mainland. An intersecting path with this trail
leads to a fantastic freshwater bog that features
a circular wooden walkway. |
